The Andy Fletcher Show

The evolution of blogging continues with this Manitoba politics blog. I am not a hack, a wonk or a black rod. I don't have a blackberry and the spin cycle will only occur after business hours. I will always allow feedback.

Blackberry Addicts: Accountability is worth the price.

Curtis Brown and Dan Lett are two reporters who are not considered friends of the tories. Anyone who thinks they are probably believe Frances Russell is a closet conservative for bashing Doer over broken roads. They report the news and take shots, sometimes deserved, against the opposition tories and the current administration. Sometimes I don’t agree with what they write, but hey, that’s what reporters do.

That being said, I think it can be argued that all official parties and media in Manitoba should embrace the transparency and accountability that FIPPA should bring. In fact, I would argue we could do more. I don’t think taxpayers mind paying for the requests of media and opposition make in order to ensure accountability of our provincial government. Hey Blackberries, why don't you get your official cheerleader polling firm to run a poll on that issue.

Here's the question:

What would you rather the NDP focus on: a) increasing accountability or b) spending millions on a rebranding exercise. I am curious to see the results.

I would have taken the two million the NDP blew on “spirited energy” and placed it in studies and committees looking for ways to improve accountability. I know there are no votes to be had in government reforms, but delivering honest open government should supercede that. Instead, the NDP reformed the Elections Finances Act to favour incumbent administrations. I don’t disagree with the concept of electoral finance reform as there is merit in reducing special interest control over our democratic system. I disagree with stacking the deck against the other two parties so that you can use government coffers to advertise your brand of cigarettes (ie. Spirited Energy).

Now, with regards to the Blackberry Staffers, Lett hits the nail on the head today. Only someone who works in the Leg (not Ledge Curtis!) would take that tone with FIPPA because they see it as a hindrance or burden to their daily life. Does that make me a staffer to ask this question? No. Lett and Brown are paid to be interested because that is their job (both are political junkies, but that is besides the point).

I am merely a political junkie with a penchant for writing. I have never been an employee of the PC or Liberal caucus for that matter. Yes, I have been involved with a party and know many people, but I do not get a paycheque from 450 Broadway or 23 Kennedy. I post after hours because I am not paid to write my ramblings at work (notice the post times). The Addicts cannot say the same thing.

The reason I started writing “the Andy Fletcher Show” under that moniker is because it is my intellectual burqa (also spelled burka or burqua). It is an empowering feeling. Dr. Suess made a career out of it. I respect the MSM blogger types like Curtis and Dan because they publish under their real names. The Black Rod was read by many early on because no one knew who they were and some of the posts were really well researched. Now that the main person was revealed, the interest and influence waned. Now he simply slams MSM. Yawn. The reason why the Addicts write anonymously is because they are frustrated NDP staffers lashing out in the death spiral of a second term. Also, because they posted from work. I notice they post after hours now. Thanks guys.

I allow feedback and welcome discussion and debate from all sides. Something the Addicts won’t do. Eventually, someone will pull off my mask like Black Rod, but it will not kill me or any political aspirations I may have (unlike Donne!) because I will happily stand by what I say and I am respectful of persons with a different point of view. Something the Addicts are not inclined to do.

Can't find that reference anywhere. Who is blackrod?

How about putting the money into healthcare, education, infrastructure, instead?

Spending money on "studies and committees", even on the topic of improved accountability, is another huge waste of taxpayer dollars...especially if, in the end, those studies are shelved and the committees' recommendations are not implemented.

ha! would you have the gov't put the money straight into healthcare, education and infrastructure? or would you target it in those areas? How would you decide where to set those targets? studies and committees, anyone? now you know how gov't works. good luck.

Krista, here is how government works. Studies (including program evaluation)and committees provide elected officials with the guidance and information to make sound decisions.

My beef with the NDP is that they are often blinded by ideology and ignore technical information provided to them.

Simply throwing more money at programs is not the way to go. That is another issue I have with Today's NDP. Policy by gut instinct and ideology has given us poor decisions and direction.

For the other reader, the Black Rod is a Winnipeg blogger whose claim to body slam fame is kicking sand at the MSM.

Andy, sorry I wasn't clear... I am familiar with the blackrod blog. I've been a longtime fan. I was not aware he had been outed and could not find a name to go with the blog ID. Got a name?

People who need to know his name are aware. Again, I have no problem with people blogging under an identity. When you go throwing rocks at people you sometimes associate with is what makes people want to "out" them.

The Black Rod writes some really columns and I have no desire to continue publishing his name.

Thanks, Andy, but I don't need a lecture on how government works. I've been fortunate enough to work in both the provincial and municipal systems, and I know if there is a will to get things done, it will happen.

We don't need a study to tell us our roads and bridges are crumbling. We need money to fix them.

We don't need a study to tell us we have a serious issue recruiting and retaining rural / ER docs. We need incentives to attract and keep them.

We're at the point where we need action, not more useless studies.

Studies and research occur all the time. I am not talking about royal commissions. I am talking about day to day business planning and program delivery.

Where did you work in government? Political positions in City Hall or the Leg? There is a lot more to goverment than political will.

Sorry to anger or lecture you, but it is not so simple to say "let's just get on with doing things" because the web of the bureaucracy is complex.

Again, if you wish to contribute to the discussion of what you would do in a little more detail, I am all ears. I am trying to move past sloganism and inch deep mile wide approaches.

In this instance, I don't think finding out about the Gull Harbour deal necessarily needs to cost much. The public should be privy to the details in the Purchase and Sale agreement or an executive summary outlining the salient terms of the deal. BBA's assertion that the provision of information will lead to the demise of private deals is simply clever obfuscating. Which is why their blog is always such a good read...

See, this is a purpose of a blog. Discussion about issues is great. Difference of opinion is healthy. Krista and I support the same party and we have different ideas. I just hope she isn't angry at me for challenging points. Its a two way street on this show...

It's not even clever. It's just tired. It's one of the oldest tricks in the book. OK, BBA: There's no reason the public needs to see proprietary info on a company, agreed, but there's every reason to see the details of the deal itself. Once a deal is made with a public entity, the deal itself is no longer proprietary. We don't need the private firm's balance sheet, just the terms and conditions, plus price, of the deal. Where the government and bureaucrats can get clever, in the worst sense of the word, is in defining "proprietary." They hold the cards when it comes to defining, so we'll never see anything worthwhile. We need an independent privacy commissioner who can sort out the details and make a ruling, including the possibility of fearlessly ordering the government to release info.

Excellent. We both agree more women are needed in public office and government's shouldn't waste money. I'll drink to that.

Maybe the Blackberry Staffers will open up debate on their blog. I won't hold my breathe.

Curtis and Dan may not be considered friends of the Tories, but then again some of the people who claim to be Tories, Lib, or NDP for that matter, aren't friends of anyone but their own little private inner circle either.

Curtis and Dan seem to understand that the politics a person practices is more important than the politics the person preaches.

"Let's keep it on topic OK?"

So let's see... the topic is

a) blackrod's identity
b) Krista's political views
c) how government works
d) Andy's political views
e) FIPPA and/or Gull Harbour
f) general netiquette
g) Donne Flanagan
h) media bloggers in general

Kinda tough to go off topic, aint it?

Sure, there are lots of topics here, but when people make rude or inappropriate suggestions they will get deleted. The topic of this blog is Manitoba politcs. The above list deals with that.

I heard BR and BBA are both created by disaffected unionists.

I heard Andy Fletcher was Hack off his meds.

I heard PITT was Hack on his meds.

Curtis Brown is Andy Fletcher.

Comments Closed is Andy Fletcher.

Andy Fletcher is blackrod feuding wit himself till his meds kick in.

Enough already.

All I read in these blogs is how it hurts your wittle feewings and how mean it is about your wittle fweinds. Nothing about the facts being wrong. Why is that?

This isn't a blog it's a bunch of jealous losers in detention whining about the popular kid in high school complaining "he's gay" or "he's rich" or something.

With all these paid bloggers from the newspapers complaining about any blogger that tweaks their bosses nose and using their company blogs to give blowjobs to the blogs that defend the papers and attack the anti-msm bloggers, the Manitoba blog scene is turning into a giant circle jerk wit Andy in the middle wishing he were an anonymous blog like BBA that everyone actually reads.

PS Hack has no meds it was just to illustrate the point.

If you hate this blog, why read it? If you think everyone who posts here is a loser and jealous why are you reading my posts?

I notice your blog is empty. Too busy reading other people's blogs I guess.

I enjoy writing and I like following the game in Manitoba. Please refrain from slander or you will be asked to leave.
